Double Degree programme to Burgundy School of Business (BSB), France

Congratulation to our student Wilson Lee who was selected to participate in the double degree program with Burgundy School of Business (BSB) at no extra tuition fee.

“Due to COVID-19, I have not been able to go traveling or participate in any internships overseas when I was in my undergraduate studies. Therefore, having this rare opportunity, I am so excited since I have been longing to travel.
As I will be studying Master in Management – Luxury management & Innovation, which is different from my current studies (MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics)), I will be gaining different scopes of knowledge. By graduating from BSB next year, I believe I will be equipped with a holistic view (from both international and domestic perspectives) of the market and industry.
What’s more, through studying in France, I hope I can pick up some French as well as the culture thereby exploring the cities and making new friends” said Wilson.

The MScFin (FTFA) Programme joins force with Hong Kong Monetary Authority to nurture future FinTech talent

To nurture financial technology (FinTech) talent, HKBU School of Business and the MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Programme have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to launch the Industry Project Masters Network (IPMN) scheme. A signing ceremony was held on 19 October 2021.

The IPMN scheme is a partnership between HKMA and four local universities, namely, HKBU, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The scheme aims to groom FinTech talent by providing opportunities to FinTech postgraduate students to work on banking projects. Students will be deeply involved in FinTech research and application projects and gain practical skills and experience. IPMN also aims to provide a means to bridge the knowledge gap between the academic world and industry. The scheme is scheduled to be officially launched in September 2022.

"The HKMA has been at the forefront of the development of Hong Kong as a major Fintech center. This important new initiative will help groom Fintech talent and provide for fruitful collaborations between academia and the finance sector,” said Prof. Ed Snape, Dean of the HKBU School of Business. “HKBU's MSc in Finance (Fintech & Financial Analytics) is honored to partner with the HKMA in this initiative.”

“We are glad that the MSc in Finance (Fintech & Financial Analytics) programme is recognized among the elite ones in the booming fintech field to groom talents for the future. The aim of the IPMN scheme echoes with what the programme has been doing together with professional industry leaders since its inception” added Prof. Aris Stouraitis, Head of the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences of the HKBU School of Business.

In the scheme, HKMA will connect with mentors from banks and FinTech firms, such as consulting or technology firms, for each project, while professors in the FinTech-related field from HKBU School of Business will serve as academic mentors to advise students. The academic advisors will not only offer advice for students when they have questions, they will also provide evaluations on students’ final project reports so that the participating students will be able to gain theoretical understanding and practical experience in the FinTech field.

Business Continuity Management

Management

Thanks to Brad Lin, Director Risk Advisory at Deloitte Hong Kong for covering the very relevant hot topic of Business Continuity Management BCM to students in the Cybersecurity class. What made this even more special was that it was focused on Virtual Banking; one of the hottest areas in FinTech right now. Students got to learn about traditional BCM but how this needs to evolve to cater for the new and emerging companies in the Virtual Banking and Digital Payment business. Crisis management is a core part of a business strategy, and needs to involve key stakeholders in a timely fashion; failure to do so can result in significant impact to the company and brand as a whole. Thanks for reminding us all that BCM is not an "IT Issue", but indeed a business-wide responsibility.

Regulatory challenges of Smart banking

Thanks to Ms. Macy Leung (Lead Counsel) and Mr Peter Law (Head of Compliance) at Bank of China (Hong Kong) to share their thoughts on the topic of Smart Banking, Regulatory challenges as well as compliance and privacy matters to consider in the Cybersecurity class. In addition to this, it was great to learn about local initiatives from the HK Monetary Authority and OpenAPI benefits and challenges for FinTech. Students are greatly benefited from the industry sharing.

A series of Industry Experts to speak in the Cybersecurity, Privacy and Regtech class

Thanks to Mr Adrian Lai, CEO of Liquefy to kick start the series and our visiting Adjunct Professor Mr Jason Lau for making this happen. Mr. Lai shared his thoughts on the topic of tokenization, as well as the cross-roads between security, privacy and blockchain with reference to FinTech applications. Our students appreciated the presentation and enjoyed it a lot.
