Exciting Times Ahead for Our MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Students!

We recently wrapped up a dynamic orientation for our 2024 intake students, led by our Associate Programme Director, Dr. Archimedes Guerra. It was an inspiring day filled with insights and industry knowledge!

During the orientation, we were honored to have an esteemed panel of guests for our industry sharing session:

• Professor Samson Tai, Professor of Practice at HKBU
• Mr. Paul Pong, Managing Director of Pegasus Fund Managers Ltd. and Chairman of IFTA
• Mr. Elvan Yau, Founder of Bitenet and Visiting Lecturer at the College of Professional and Continuing Education, Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Under the expert moderation of Dr. Guerra, our guests shared invaluable perspectives on essential skills and competencies for students entering the FinTech job market. They discussed the exciting future of FinTech, highlighting major trends they foresee shaping the industry over the next five years. Their advice for students considering a career in FinTech was truly motivating!

Additionally, we had a special sharing session from Ms. Prasadi Samaranayake, a graduate from the class of 2020, who recounted her enriching study life and experiences at HKBU, providing firsthand insights into the journey ahead.

We are thrilled to welcome our new students into the HKBU community and look forward to an incredible journey together in the world of FinTech!

Sales & Trading Simulation Training Workshop

The MSc in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) programme recently organized a phenomenal Sales & Trading Simulation Training Workshop on 10th November 2023. The workshop covered a range of essential topics, including understanding S&T in an Investment Bank, platform introductions, reading research, simulation activities, and performance reviews. It was an invaluable opportunity for our students to enhance their skills and gain practical insights into the industry. Exciting Orientation Day for Master of Science in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Programme

The Orientation Day of the Master of Science in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Programme was successfully held on September 5, 2023. The event provided valuable insights and networking opportunities for our new intake of students.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Prof. Gerard Prendergast, Associate Dean of the School of Business, and Ms. Alison Li, Senior Executive Officer of the Global Engagement Section of the School of Business, for joining the orientation. Their introduction highlighted the international diversity and integration of the School for our students.

We also thank Ms. Yolanda Chau, Marketing, Membership & Development Officer at IFTA (Institute of Financial Technologists of Asia), for conducting a briefing on CFT (Certified Financial Technologists) during the event.

After the programme briefing by Prof. Aris Stouraitis, Programme Director of the Master of Science in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Programme, an industry sharing session was held. Industry experts, Prof. Samson Tai, Professor of Practice at HKBU, Mr. Barry Chan, Chief Digital Officer & Head of FINNOSpace at FORMS HK, Prof. Dorothy Chau, Associate Professor of Practice at HKBU, APAC Data Protection Officer & Head of Security Assurance at Crypto.com, and Mr. Victor Yim, Head of FinTech at HK Cyberport, shared their invaluable experiences and expertise with students. They provided an in-depth understanding of the current trends, career opportunities, and potential career paths in the FinTech industry, shedding light on the practical skills required to excel.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the distinguished speakers, faculty members, and staff who contributed to the successful Orientation Day. We are confident our students are now well-equipped to embark on an enriching educational journey in the Master of Science in Finance (FinTech and Financial Analytics) Programme.

MScFin (FTFA) students visited the Bank of China Innovation Lab

Our MScFin (FTFA) students visited the Bank of China Innovation Lab located in the Hong Kong Science Park on May 24, 2023. The visit aimed to provide students with a firsthand experience of the latest technological advancements in banking and finance.

During the visit, the students were given a tour of the lab and introduced to several cutting-edge technologies, including the open banking ecosystem, robotic process automation, network graph platform, AI credit model, federated learning, synthetic data, and the metaverse.

The students had the opportunity to engage in a group discussion with the lab's experts, where they had a chance to ask questions and gain insights into the future of banking and finance. They also had the chance to explore the potential applications of these technologies in the industry and how they could help shape the future of banking.

The visit was a valuable experience for the students as it provided them with a deeper understanding of the latest trends and technologies in the financial industry. It also gave them an opportunity to network with experts in the field and gain valuable insights that they can apply in their future careers.

Prof. Christos Cabolis’ Valuable Insights to MScFin (FTFA) Students

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Christos Cabolis, Adjunct Professor of Economics and Competitiveness and Chief Economist and Head of Operations at IMD World Competitiveness Center, for conducting a seminar for our master's class on 19 May 2023. Prof. Cabolis shared his vast knowledge and experience in Hong Kong and China in the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking, which was highly insightful and informative.

The seminar was an excellent opportunity for our students to learn from a seasoned professional in the world competitiveness ranking. Prof. Cabolis provided real-world examples and practical advice, which stimulated critical thinking and intellectual curiosity among our students.

The seminar was a resounding success, thanks to Prof. Cabolis 's invaluable insights and expertise. It was an inspiring and informative experience for our students, and we are immensely grateful for Prof. Cabolis 's contribution to our programme.

Once again, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Prof. Cabolis for taking the time to conduct the seminar and share his insights with our master's class. We hope to welcome him back to our programme in the future.

FinTech Seminar: Portfolio Management and Market Outlook

Thanks to Dr. Ana Armstrong to deliver the seminar “Portfolio Management and Market Outlook” for our master’s students on 9 May 2023. Dr. Armstrong is an Advisory Board Member of the Finance Department of Imperial College London and our MScFin (FTFA) Programme. She is also a Founder and CEO of Armstrong Investment Managers LLP. During the seminar, Dr. Armstrong shared her insights and professional experience in portfolio management, cryptopia, structured securities, etc… with our students and faculty members. We enjoyed the seminar very much.
